Frame of Mind 2

Yeah, so I was watching Inuyasha, except a few things were different: Inuyasha's hair was black, for starters, and Kagome's uniform was blue...and they were voiced by Kirby Morrow and Kelly Sheridan (aka Miroku and Sango)...and they were going by different names...and Naraku and Sesshoumaru were sort of combined...

Oh -- and they called it "Escaflowne"...

(*grin*)

So yeah, that was interesting. It was the movie version though -- it came on adult swim after the new Inuyasha episode tonight and I sorta got dragged into it (mainly because I was having fun recognizing all the voices -- Kelly Sheridan, Venus Terzo, Kirby Morrow, Willow Johnson, Scott McNeil...practically everybody from Ocean Studios but Richard Ian Cox and Moneca Stori, coincidentally...). It was a bit confusing (I've never seen the series), and I kept having to change the volume because half the dialogue was so quiet (for effect, no doubt) that I couldn't catch a word, but then the scene would change and it would be normal hearing level again. I read a review of it online that said it wasn't as good as the series -- the characters weren't built well enough, and the ending was anti-climactic. I can certainly see where that reviewer was coming from (there was a sort of disconnect in the development of Van and Hitomi's relationship, like they skipped a step...or at least a conversation...), and I didn't like the end at all (if that's how the series ends, I'm not wasting my time or money on it -- though it still wouldn't beat s-CRY-ed in the "bad ending" department. You gotta get up pretty early in the morning to come up with a more pointless last episode than that one...).

Ah well -- gotta get up tomorrow and go to the Met to find a painting to write about for my essay class...and I'm planning to stop by Suncoast on the way back to pick up the third Inuyasha movie. But that's assuming I can find the Suncoast -- I'm still getting the hang of getting around in the city, and this will be only my second time riding the subway by myself, so wish me luck...

(Uh, yeah, in case you're cofused, I'm in New York now, at college -- I know I haven't posted much here in awhile, so I don't remember what I told you guys last...)

You're in New York? How awesome is that?

I love Escaflowne, both the movie and the series, although the ending to both majorly sucks. And yes, that is how the series ends as well. Basically the movie is like a reprise of the series, just shortened to around 2 hours. Kirby Morrow sounds much smexier in Esca. (I had no idea it was him, it's been a while since I last saw it, and thankfully we're a few hours behind, so it's barely gonna start in a little bit.)

Meh. Hitomi is voice by Sango's actress? Well, I just hope I can't recognize her.

(*grin*) I agree -- I loved hearing Kirby play the tortured bad-boy with the heart of gold for a change. Though in my opinion he didn't get to talk enough in the movie...maybe I should watch the show just to listen to him a bit more...love him...

And yep, Hitomi is voiced by the same person who voices Sango -- she was the first one I recognized. I cracked up when I realized their two characters were playing romantic interests opposite each other again. I love recognizing voices...

And yes, being in New York is awesome. Weird and scary at times, but awesome nonetheless...(*grin*)

Actually, I just realized that I hadn't seen the movie version with his voice. I was starting to watch it on Adult Swim when I realized I've only seen the subbed version, never before the fully dubbed. So that made me realize I prefer Kirby as Miroku, because the original Japanese voice for Van (Tomakazu Seki) is much sexier.

Sad to say I can't stand Sango, or her voice, so I'm not watching it. Maaya Sakamoto is one of my favorite Japanese singers in general, and I also prefer her voice in the original role of Hitomi. I'm just picky that way ^.^;

Oh, and speaking of recognizing voices, Allen Shezar's voice was done by Brian Drummond, who was Spike in Cowboy Bebop. I got a kick out recognizing that one ^.~

Um, sorry but...no, actually -- he wasn't. Spike is voiced by Steven Jay Blum (sometimes billed as David Lucas), who also does the voices of such characters as Makoto Shishio (RuroKen), Mugen (Samurai Champloo), Kazuma (s-CRY-ed), Roger Smith (The Big O), and Darcia (Wolf's Rain), to name a few. He actually belongs to a different studio than the one that dubbed this movie.

See, I've determined that there seem to be two distinct groups (which I refer to as "studios," though I'm not positive that they actually are studios) of voice actors that, to the best of my knowledge, never overlap. For example, shows like Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, and Escaflowne all use such voices as Richard Ian Cox, Kelly Sheridan, Kirby Morrow, Moneca Stori, Paul Dobson, David Kaye, Michael Donovan, Janyse Jaud and so forth. The other (and seemingly more prolific) group -- which dubs shows such as Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Love Hina, Trigun, Samurai Champloo, and many others -- uses voices such as Steven Jay Blum, Dorothy Melendrez, Richard Cansino, Kirk Thornton, Beau Billingslea, Wendee Lee, and one of my all-time favorite voices: Lex Lang (Sano, from RuroKen).

Yeah...I really love picking out voices...it's sort of a hobby with me...

Well, personally I've never had a problem with Kelly Sheridan (who I actually first new as Ukyo from Ranma 1/2, so she always sounded so mature by comparison as Sango -- not to mention when she was next to Kagome...), or with Sango, though I can't say she's my absolute favorite character either. I definitely understand about being used to a different voice though. That was one of the things I hated most about the Kenshin movie and OAVs -- that they used different VAs from the series. They were also bad and extremely depressing (respectively), but that's neither here nor there...

Heh, my friend made me watch Escaflowne, and I was very confused. But the music was good ^^;

How're you liking New York? Hee, I wish I could just walk to the Met one morning...

Eat some real NY bagels for me!
